Here’s the thing. Maybe I’ve been behind the curve, but I was under the impression that Kevin Jennings wasn’t even present at this conference. At least, that is what some of his defenders had argued. He wasn’t there…he wasn’t the  one doing the fisting demonstrations! But the fact that the organization he founded and led, was engaging in activities like this was enough for me. Either he had lost control of his organization and was completely incompetent, or he consented and agreed with it. I tended to believe the latter, but neither choice was acceptable to me for an adviser to the President.

News of Enke’s death was announced by Martin Kind, Hannover’s president, and a subsequent police statement said that “first indications are that it was a suicide.”

Kind said Enke had appeared “unstable” recently. He and his wife lost their 2-year-old daughter to a heart ailment in 2006.

Even though he had not been selected to play for Germany in matches against the Ivory Coast on Saturday and Chile on Nov. 18, Enke was considered the leading candidate to start at the World Cup, according to national team Coach Joachim Loew.

Robert Enke (24 August 1977 – 10 November 2009[2]) was a German international football goalkeeper.

Enke played at leading clubs in several European countries, namely Barcelona, Benfica and Fenerbahçe, but made most appearances for Bundesliga side Hannover 96 in his homeland.

He won eight full international caps for the German national team between 2007 and his death in 2009, and was part of the squad which finished as runners-up in Euro 2008. At the time of his death, he was widely considered to be a strong contender for the number one spot at the 2010 World Cup

Early career

Enke started his career in the youth ranks of hometown club Carl Zeiss Jena and worked his way up to the first team during the 1995–96 season.  He made his professional debut on 11 November 1995, against future club Hannover 96 in the 2. Bundesliga. He was given the opportunity after first choice Mario Neumann conceded 14 goals in just three matches, prompting coach Eberhard Vogel to drop him for the youngster Enke. Enke played three games during November 1995, but Neumann was restored to the team after this period and Enke did not appear for the first team again that season.

The goalkeeper actually would never play for the club again as he was snapped up by Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach in Summer 1996. Enke spent his first two seasons here with the club’s U-23 side, playing in the lower leagues and honing his talent.

His chance came on the eve of the 1998–99 season when the club’s legendary goalkeeper Uwe Kamps suffered an injury and new coach Friedel Rausch gave Enke his big chance to finally make his club debut. His first Bundesliga game came on 15 August 1998 in a 3-0 win over Schalke 04 that put them top of the table. However, this position quickly changed as, despite Enke’s best efforts, the club plummeted to the foot of the league where they remained from October until their eventual relegation (Rainer Bonhof was manager from November onward).

Life abroad

Although Mönchengladbach’s fortunes were on a downward path, Enke’s were not. After his first full season as a professional, he was quickly signed by Benfica of Portugal. The club were then managed by Enke’s countryman Jupp Heynckes, who promptly made him captain. His time in Portugal was a turbulent one, as the club changed manager three times in his three seasons there and suffered their lowest ever league finish (6th) in a trophyless spell, beset by financial difficulties that caused players wages to often be late.

Despite these problems, Enke’s performances here gained him a list of admirers, with clubs like Arsenal,  Atletico Madrid   and Manchester United chasing him.  After contract talks with Benfica stalled, Enke took up the offer of Spanish giants FC Barcelona and moved on a free transfer in June 2002 on a three-year deal.

Life at the Nou Camp proved tough for Enke – he later labelled the goalkeeper’s spot at Barca as the “most difficult goalkeeping position in Europe”   – as he ended up playing second choice to Roberto Bonano. His debut set the mark, as the club were humiliatingly knocked out of the Spanish Cup by third flight Novelda CF at the first hurdle on 11 September 2002 and was criticised by teammate Frank de Boer for his part in their exit.   His brief taste of La Liga came in a 20 minute appearance as a substitute in a 2–2 draw at Osasuna on 2 March 2003. He did manage to sample some European action during his spell though as he made two UEFA Champions League appearances, against FC Bruges and Galatasaray in the group stage.

The following season, as Frank Rijkaard replaced Louis van Gaal as coach, Enke was loaned out to Turkish side Fenerbahçe – then managed by German coach Christoph Daum – as part of the deal that saw Rüştü Reçber move to the Spanish club. However, his career continued to stall as he managed to play just a solitary game there, a traumatic 0–3 defeat to Istanbulspor on 10 August 2003. His own fans pelted him with firelighters and bottles during the game, blaming him for this bitter defeat. These scenes caused Enke to immediately quit the club and his planned one-year loan and return to Spain.

After a four month spell back at FC Barcelona, but outside the first team squad, Enke dropped down to the Spanish Segunda División when he was loaned to CD Tenerife in January 2004 for the remainder of the season. Here, he enjoyed an upturn, performing strongly and winning acclaim from the fans and other clubs.

Bundesliga return

Following his return to form at CD Tenerife, Enke returned to his homeland joining Bundesliga side Hannover 96 in July 2004 on a free transfer in an initial two year deal. His career enjoyed its greatest success and stability, as he became firmly established as the club’s first choice and was voted the best goalkeeper in the league by his fellow professionals in Kicker magazine.

Such form caused Enke to be linked with moves to larger clubs, particularly VfB Stuttgart. In December 2006, however, he ended this speculation by signing a contract extension with Hannover 96 until the end of the 2009–10 season.   He was elected team captain by his teammates for the 2007–08 season.  After his serious injury in autumn 2008, Enke returned into the team for the first match after the winter break on 31 January 2009. Before his death he was considered a cult hero by Hannover 96 fans  and Captain of his club.

International career

Enke first represented his country in 1998–99 whilst playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach, winning a place in the German Under-21 side and holding down that number one jersey throughout the season, playing 15 times in total. His performances there convinced national team coach Erich Ribbeck to include him in the squad for the 1999 Confederations Cup, although he did not feature in any games.

His international career then stalled when he left Germany and he was not considered again until his return to the Bundesliga. The growing acclaim he enjoyed since saw him in contention for the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad, under Jürgen Klinsmann, although he missed out ultimately. He succeeded in breaking into the squad shortly after, under new coach Joachim Löw, in being chosen for a friendly against Georgia, and, after first choice Jens Lehmann caught the flu, again against Cyprus.

He finally made his senior international debut for Germany in a 0–1 friendly defeat to Denmark in Duisburg on 28 March 2007.

On 8 October 2008, Enke broke the scaphoid of his left hand while practising with the national team for the match against Russia. He was operated on 10 October and had to pause for the following two months.

After his return in January 2009, he became number one keeper in the national team again.

In September 2009, Enke had to pause again because of an infection with campylobacter.   He died on 10 November 2009 with eight national caps.

Personal life and Death

Robert Enke was married to wife Teresa and had a daughter, Lara, who died (aged 2) on 17 September 2006 due to a heart birth defect (hypoplastic left heart syndrome).   They also adopted a baby girl in 2009. They lived together on a farm.

He was involved with his wife in the animal rights campaign, and they had many pets themselves. He lent his face to the PETA campaign against the fur industry.

On 10 November 2009 Enke apparently committed suicide at a level crossing when hit by an oncoming train in Neustadt am Rübenberge.  German website Morgenpost Online have quoted a spokesperson from the Hannover police as saying: “Enke has thrown himself under a train at Neustadt am Rübenberge”. Enke’s friend and advisor, Jörg Neblung, confirmed his death as a suicide to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

A state government official said the man in custody is Christopher Craft of Pine Plains and the hostage was Stissing Mountain Middle School Principal Bob Hess. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release details.

Trooper Tom Jones Jr. said police are going room by room through the combined middle and senior high schools as a precaution, evacuating students as they go.

“Evidently, there is some speculation that he (the gunman) had a loved one in the military and somehow this is some contrived scheme on his part to do something about that,” Pine Plains Town Supervisor Gregg Pulver told The Associated Press Radio.

Pulver said the gunman was in his 40s. Police were in contact with the suspect throughout the standoff, he said.

Pulver said counseling will made available to students. The students are being loaded onto buses and taken to a highway garage to be accounted for before being sent back to school, according to Lt. Tom Lasher of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

The school about 90 miles north of New York City was on lockdown just after school began Tuesday with the gunman and his hostage contained to one room. Students and other faculty members were locked in other rooms.

After the man surrendered, armed officers could be seen standing guard at the front door of the school. The handcuffed man was led to an ambulance, where he was checked by paramedics.

The high school has about 500 students, while the middle school has about 300 students.

Parents were told to gather in a parking lot at a restaurant a couple of blocks from school. Hundreds of people, including parents and other townspeople, were milling around an intersection near the school, which sits in a rural valley amid rolling hills.

Lisa Pusello, whose son is a sixth grader at the school, said she heard about the incident by phone from a girlfriend.

The good news for Jefferson Parish public school officials is that recent reforms helped increase the system’s performance score by five points last year, the largest gain ever. In addition, five parish schools, all of them magnets created in recent years, ranked among metro New Orleans’ top 10 public schools.

But despite Jefferson’s notable progress, too many of its 44,000 students still are attending mediocre schools. That should prompt the School Board and administrators to speed up reforms and to allow more independent charter schools.

Jefferson fell in statewide rankings from 57th, which wasn’t great, to 64th. That’s almost the worst in the state. Jefferson officials said the state took over failing schools in other districts, allowing them to surge past Jefferson in the rankings. They noted that out of Jefferson’s 87 schools, only two earned the failing label. The state has not taken those over.

But Jefferson’s district-wide performance score of 78.4 is well below the state average of 91. So the district still is underperforming in one of the lowest-ranked states in the nation.
Under Superintendent Diane Roussel’s tenure and with the support of the School Board, the parish has launched numerous reforms, including creating its growing network of magnet schools. But only a fraction of the system’s students, about 2,000, attend those magnets. Meanwhile, almost half the district’s schools scored at least 10 points below the state average last year.

Upset with the Jefferson Parish public school system’s dismal state ranking, School Board member Cedric Floyd is demanding that Superintendent Diane Roussel develop a plan for moving the system to the top.

Under a Floyd proposal that the board will consider Wednesday, Roussel would have until April 30 to come up with a plan to elevate Jefferson, now ranked 64th of 68 Louisiana school systems, into the top 20 percent.

The School Board meets at 5 p.m. at Bonnabel Magnet Academy High School in Kenner.

Roussel said the process has already begun and that the system’s almost 5-point improvement from last year indicates that what she and her staff are doing is working.

Cedric_Floyd_.jpgCedric Floyd”We’ve gone up more than we’ve ever gone up,” Roussel said today. “But I can’t guarantee a particular ranking. When you talk about rankings, if other school systems are doing well, we don’t move at all.”

Statewide, public schools improved by 4.7 points, lifting Louisiana’s overall school performance score from 86.3 to 91. While Jefferson’s scores increased by 4.9 percent — from 73.5 to 78.4 — the system actually fell from 57th to 64th in the state ranking.

Performance scores are calculated for most schools using a combination of test scores and attendance. Dropout rates are factored in for students in seventh and eighth grades, while dropout and graduation rates are used to determine high school scores.

Floyd said that despite Jefferson’s improved scores, there is no excuse for being ranked among the worst school systems in Louisiana.

“It seems that many school systems have leaped in front of us,” he said. “We need to have higher expectations for kids, and I don’t think that has been stressed.”

In developing a plan, Floyd said, Roussel should consider everything from lower student-teacher ratios and higher teacher salaries to merit pay, year-round schooling, weekend academies and drop-out prevention programs.

roussel.jpgDiane RousselHe singled out a program called FastForWord, a reading comprehension program that is now in four West Bank schools but that Floyd said should be system-wide. The computer-based program is aimed at improving critical language and reading skills through cognitive skills such as memory, attention, processing and sequencing.

Floyd wants Roussel to include in her plan an approximate cost and timetable.

“The expense would be astronomical,” Roussel said. “You’re talking millions and millions of dollars. FastForWord alone costs about $150,000 per school, and to put in every school would exceed $12 million.”

Board member Glenn Hayes Jr. said that while there is room for improvement, reaching the top 20 percent of all Louisiana school systems could take years.

There is no doubt that, for that particular day, Kishenji was the hero of prime time television as he talked about why police officers should be kidnapped and killed, and why the government should bargain for their lives. When the anchor quizzed him about the health of Athindranath Dutta — what he was eating and how he was staying with the ‘most wanted’ — Kishenji went to the extent of consoling his family, and elaborately expressing his concern about the health of his so-called ‘father’ who was being well taken care of since he had been declared no less than a ‘Prisoner of war’. This new incarnation of Robin Hood then went on to direct the parents of the prisoner to bargain with the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya government, even inciting them to ask why it was not acting swiftly, or bargaining with him to get the abducted officer released.

It was no wonder that it was Kishenji’s day as he went on and on from one TV channel to the other — his phone so continuously busy that even negotiators (of the government) wanting to speak to him had to queue up and wait their turn. At one point, TV channels went to the extent of showing Kishenji — supposedly holed up in some place around Lalgarh by the security forces — roar and threaten that if the joint forces did not withdraw immediately and give him free passage, the abducted officer would be dead. After warnings and helpless appeals by the parents, family — and even the news channels themselves — not to hurt the officer, the forces were seen pulling out and standing as mute spectators even as the release show was being planned in front of the media.

Police could not trace — or were not allowed to trace — a person wanted for the killing of so many police personnel as well as CPIM supporters in Lalgarh! The media played the negotiator in the rescue game. Media personnel were asked to switch off their mobile phones before being taken to a remote school where the handover was to take place. After a good long lecture and the propagation of the Maoists ideology, the ‘prisoner of war’ was handed to the media. All the goodbyes and shaking of hands was done on camera even as Athindranath’s life was saved and he was sent safely home. The fall out was that the media televised the entire deal done by the government in which twenty-two suspected Maoists were released in the Midnapur court.

Kishenji’s phone went out of range after his newly attained Robin Hood image. The media had other human stories to focus on: of Athindranath meeting his family again, of his going to the Dakshineshwar temple, and of how he understood the plight of the people of Lalgarh and the Maoist influence over them. Athindranath now believes that the people of Lalgarh are dispossessed, and are in need of ‘development’ — something he did not realize during his tenure as police officer there.

What the TV channels missed out on is that they were actually dancing to the tune of Kishenji legitimizing the abduction and killing done by the Maoists. They also missed out on the fact that now the Maoists will not face the media any time soon since, as far as they are concerned, its work is over i.e., in successfully bringing forth the humane face of the Maoist leader as he released the officer in charge. No questions were posed to him as to why the gunmen killed two other sub inspectors of police in the same police station for fear of antagonizing him and thus hurting the abducted officer. Nobody pointed out that the Maoists killing spree was no less brutal than terrorist attacks. Nobody questioned how such killings can be justified or asked why he should not be punished and be called a killer.

In other words, the media ended by playing into the hands of the Maoists and becoming its propaganda machine. In fact, Kishenji himself conceded to the media that they failed in Andhra Pradesh because of the ‘developmental’ work done there. This means that if development came to Lalagrh, the Maoists would fail there as well. This only proves the point that he quite definitely would not let anyone work in Lalgarh for progress and development.

Why has Athindranath Dutta — by now a media celebrity — not been forced to answer the question about what was he doing as a police officer while his colleagues were being gunned down in front of his eyes by female Maoists? The deceased police sub inspectors sitting in the police station were in ‘lungis and T-shirts when they were killed by the armed female wing of the Maoists. Athindranath was also in casual clothes when he was kidnapped and taken away by two female armed Maoists on motorcycles. Why did no one question how a police officer could be kidnapped in broad daylight from a police station which had a branch of the State Bank of India next door?

Many questions arise. Was all this bargaining by the government? The ones who were released from the Midnapur court on that fateful day were actually some very poor women booked on trivial grounds, with the police not having filed even a charge sheet against them. They were actually booked for ninety days so as to create pressure on the families to divulge the truth about suspected male Maoists cadres. Here the government did not want the media to pursue their cases, hence the bargain game. And Kishenji on live TV was bargaining the release of senior Maoists leaders and the withdrawal of joint forces rather than just the release of these women.

Thus, the media danced to the flute of the Maoist Kishenji who, rather than forging a deal with the government, succeeded in using the media to his own advantage. Now, Kishenji is not available to the media. His phone is switched off. But, he will call them up when he needs to.
